India Sweets and Spices


So I wouldn't so much call this place a restaurant as it's more of a cafeteria/grocery store. Definitely a more non-traditional place for Andy and I to get Sunday brunch, but why not!?
I honestly couldn't tell you what we ate but, whatever it was, it was delicious. Maybe one of you Indian readers our there could help me identify what I ate!!
My favorite thing about this place was the fact that I could see all the food just like in a cafeteria so I felt comfortable experimenting. I love Indian food but usually I stick to what i know: chicken tikka masala, pulao rice, garlic naan... This place got me to try new and exciting flavors!

  1. Looks delicious! And from what I can see, it looks like you had saag paneer, raita,pulao, dal,samosa,vada, mango lassi, mint chutney, bhajis and papad? :D

  2. The one that looks like doughnut is called Vada, the one near that is samosa (much like a spicy empanada), the green gravy is saag paneer (saag=spinach, paneer=cottage cheese), dal= lentils ,mango lassi (mango flavoured sweet yogurt).

    Hey Amber if you want to try out some of the south indian dishes, you should look up SARAVANA BHAVAN restaurant. Its a chain of the famous south Indian restaurant established at several places with US. They have the tastes similar to the one in South India. Their signature dishes are the sambar and 14 idly(rice cakes)

    Few other food suggestions-
    Adaai Avial - Adaai is a thick lentil+bean crepe served with delicous mixed vegetable gravy called avial.

    Pesarattu - it is a crepe-like bread unique to Telugu cuisine that is similar to dosa. It is made with batter of green gram (moong dal), but unlike a dosa, it does not contain rice. Pesarattu is eaten both in breakfast and as snack that popular in Andhra Pradesh state in India. It is typically served with ginger or tamarind chutney. Green chillies, ginger, or onions may be used in different variants of this snack.

    Appam- its a type of food in South India and Sri Lankan cuisine. It is called chitau (ଚିତାଉ) Pitha in Oriya, Paddu or Gulle Eriyappa in Kodava. It is known as ආප්ප (Appa) in Sinhala. It is eaten most frequently for breakfast or dinner.
